WADE'S JOURNAL

January 26th

I flew back to Adelaide just in time to see the last 90km Stage race down town. Graeme Brown won the last Stage with local boy Stuart Ogrady just missing out on the overall Tour win.

Talk about a hot, windy dusty race.... I heard it was 44 in Melbourne today. They even ran only 2 motos for the race event but we still had to race 3 motos for the UCI race. This was a race inside of a race. I was mainly here for the UCI race to try and grab some good scores in while I can so I can hopefully have a shot of the Overall UCI World Ranking and the 10,000 Swiss Francs for the winner. They also ran one of the Track Attack races which they have been racing all week around Melbourne. The crazy thing is the UCI race has no entry fee and no prize money, only the chance to get in you scores for the overall title. Then the AA Pro race had some money up for grabs. I ended up racing both as I figured I would only end up racing 7 laps for the day. I was not feeling to great on my BMX bike as I haven't had much time to ride it lately, but I managed to get over the jumps good enough to take the win in AA. UCI race did not go as planned as I over jumped one of the jumps in the second straight. When I landed my front tire rolled a little and I lost some of my speed. I ended up coming back down the last straight but only to come in 3rd. I am now on equal points for 1st with Johnno in the UCI race. With 6 races to go for the rest of the guys to make up their top 5 finishes, I have to count all my scores as I will only be able to race 5 of the 8.

Johnno had the holeshot in the AA Pro Main, but had to settle
for 2nd place behind me after a sprint down the last straight.

I flew down to Melbourne for the 2nd round of the UCI World BMX ranking series. I arrived to meet up and stay with an old BMX buddy Dean Patch. We used to race each other around 10 years ago, just before I left for America. It was so hot and smoky in Melbourne from all the fires, but we still had to the chance to take out Dean's tricked up Go Cart. I also went to check out the BMX track I was racing on tomorrow but I was so beat up from training with the sprint team yesterday I didn't even have the energy to jump anything. I did get hand pump on the go cart though... man those things can handle.

Friday practice at 136 km/h.

Monday and Tuesday's would have to be the hardest day's on the training program for me. Today I overheated at the track and was about to blow a gasket, but it cannot be all that bad as I am improving on my time's.
The Tour Down Under started today in Adelaide which goes for 6 days. A few of the top Pro team's are in town trying to grab a few UCI points to get into the Tour De France. So a few of us went into town after dinner to watch the crit race.

Sundays are days off on the training schedule but this is one of the only time's I can get to ride my BMX bike. Having to race next weekend in Melbourne for the second round of the UCI points series it will be hard to just jump back on the BMX bike with out spending some time on it. On the Track bike I am pushing around a 94" gear with 165 cranks, to come from that and trying to spin a 54" gear with 180 cranks takes some time to adjust the legs.

Some trails down town Adelaide.

January 18th

In the morning we all went to the gym and did a heavy session and then that night we all raced at the Adelaide Superdrome to a packed crowd.

January 14th

Just in the first few days I am already sore and tired. Up early and leaving for the gym by 8:15, heavy work outs in the gym then riding back to the house to quickly shower and head off to lunch for 11:30. We are off again by 1pm riding to the Track for about 45 min and then doing a hard session. On the way back we are usually riding in a head wind just to make the days training complete. We all get back just in time to clean up and head off for dinner for 6pm. Every day is not a double day of training, but the half days we have off just does not last long enough.

January 10th

Today I flew back to Adelaide as I will be training for the first Track World Cup in Moscow. I only found out a few days back that it was a for sure thing but the day before that I was Invited to the RedBull Underground race in Germany. I have not raced this race in Germany before but I have heard it is a lot of fun, racing in a salt mine 1000 feet underground through the tunnels. Redbull are putting on some great events with big prize money and Guaranteed money to everyone who is invited. The only bummer thing about this is, the Redbull race and the World cup are on the same day. It was a tough decision to make but I decided to give the Track World Cup ago as I will not get the chance to race in the Track World Cup circuit that often. So for the next month I will be learning to turn left and pedal big gears. In between I leave to go to Moscow I have another UCI BMX race I will do in Melbourne. You can now check out my 2003 Race schedule.
